Silver Purchase Berlin: Fine silver counts, not the shine

Tableware, coins or a box from an estate: at the Silver Purchase Berlin we weigh every piece and measure its silver content. You see both values on the monitor. The fine silver is paid at the rate we adjust to the precious metals exchange every 10 minutes.

What is my silver worth? The calculator shows you in advance

The calculator uses the same formula as we do at the counter: weight times fineness times daily rate. A spoon stamped 800 with a weight of 50 grams contains 40 grams of fine silver. Only that share is paid.

For cutlery the result at the counter is often lower. Why? Knives have a steel blade, and their hollow handles are filled with putty, which your kitchen scale weighs just like the silver. Only the silver is paid for.

Silver Purchase Berlin: why we measure every piece individually

You cannot tell silver's content by looking at it. A heavy candlestick is often weighted inside with plaster or pitch so that it stands firmly. A plain cup, on the other hand, can be solid 925 silver. That is why we do not rely on first impressions.

Every piece first goes on the calibrated scale, then we determine the fineness, i.e. the share of pure silver in the alloy. Both numbers appear on the monitor. You can check the offer yourself using the daily rate. Only then do you accept or not.

Tarnished or broken silver costs you nothing at the Silver Purchase Berlin. A black spoon yields just as much per gram as a polished one.

Cutlery, coins, bars: what we buy
Tableware and cutlery
Solid cutlery usually bears 800, 835 or 925. For knives, only the handle counts. We also check complete sets for a value above the material.
Silver coins
For bullion coins such as Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic, the silver rate is what matters most. Historical circulation coins, such as 5 Reichsmark, consist of an alloy. We measure its share.
Silver bars
Minted bars with a fineness of 999 are valued quickly, especially if the certificate and original packaging are still included. We measure cast bars without a manufacturer mark in the same way.
Silver jewelry
We buy chains and rings made of 925 sterling silver by weight. We deduct stones and amber. A broken clasp does not matter.
Old and broken silver
Dented jugs, broken-off handles, single earrings: for the material value only the fine silver counts. You do not have to repair anything.
Industrial silver
We analyze wires, contacts and granules from the workshop like any other piece. For larger quantities, arrange an appointment beforehand.
Medals and commemorative coins
Many medals are made of 925 or 999 silver, some are only silver-plated. The measurement clarifies this in seconds. We check rare coinages for collector value.
Inheritance and estates
Inherited tableware often fills several boxes. We go through everything together. What you keep is up to you.

I wanted to sell my silver coins. Felt safe and taken seriously near KaDeWe right away. Price-wise much better than elsewhere.

Absolutely professional. Brought in old, broken silver jewelry. The spectrometer showed exactly what was in it. Great service!

Trust that convinces the media, too

X-ray fluorescence: the silver content in seconds

We determine the fineness with an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, XRF for short, which shows within seconds which metals are in the alloy. We do not file anything off. We do not need acid either, your cutlery stays as it is.

XRF has one limit. It only measures the surface, so for silver-plated pieces it shows silver even though brass or nickel silver lies underneath. We will tell you openly what that means for your piece.

Reading silver hallmarks: 800, 925 and the old lot

Genuine silver almost always carries a punch, a stamped hallmark. The number states the silver share in thousandths: 925 means 92.5 percent fine silver. German silver from 1888 often also shows a crescent and crown. Older pieces carry a lot mark, 12 lot equals 750.
Be careful with 90, 100 or EPNS. These marks mean: silver-plated. The number states the grams of silver applied to a standard surface. Underneath is base metal.

Selling silver in Berlin: what you should leave alone at home

Most mistakes happen while tidying up, not at the counter. These five are easy to avoid.

01
Cleaning silver or using a dip bath
Dip baths and polishing paste remove material. Shine adds nothing, and for collector coins the value even drops.
02
Breaking open filled handles
Do not open knife handles yourself. We take the filling into account, and an intact set can have collector value.
03
Counting silver-plated pieces too
If 90, 100 or EPNS is stamped on the handle, the piece is only silver-plated. Set these aside beforehand.
04
Tossing bullion coins loose into a tin
In a capsule or tube coins are valued faster. Loose, they get scratched.
05
Coming without ID
ID or passport belong in your bag. From €2,000 in cash the money laundering act requires us to identify you.
?
Genuine or silver-plated?
The measurement is free and non-binding and rarely takes longer than 15 minutes. Bring the silver just as it sits in your cabinet.

Your questions about the Silver Purchase Berlin
What does the Silver Purchase Berlin pay today for 800 cutlery?
That depends on the rate. We calculate weight times 0.8 times the daily rate, because 800 silver contains 80 percent fine silver, and we sync the rate with the exchange every 10 minutes.
Does the Silver Purchase Berlin also buy silver-plated cutlery?
Usually not. With a 90 or 100 plating, the cutlery only has a thin silver coating on brass or nickel silver. If you are unsure, bring the pieces anyway. We measure for free and tell you what is genuine.
I cannot find a hallmark. Is my silver genuine anyway?
That can be measured. On old pieces the hallmark is often worn, on souvenirs it is sometimes missing entirely. X-ray fluorescence shows the silver content even without a hallmark. If there is no silver in it, you simply take the piece back.
How much silver is in a knife with a steel blade?
Less than the scale first shows. The blade is steel, the hollow handle is usually filled with putty. Silver is only the shell of the handle. We show you at the counter, item by item, how we calculate this share.
Selling silver in Berlin by mail: how does it work?
You order the free shipping bag. Photograph your silver beforehand and note every piece on a slip for the parcel. We check the shipment with the same procedure as in the store. If you decline the offer, the gold-back guarantee applies.
Do I have to pay tax on the proceeds from silver coins?
Usually not. If more than twelve months lie between purchase and sale, private proceeds generally remain tax-free (§ 23 EStG). For inherited silver, you count the time the deceased person owned it. This is general information, not tax advice.
Is a home visit worthwhile for a silver collection?
For large holdings, yes. Nobody likes carrying several boxes full of cutlery and candlesticks across the city, so our team then appraises the silver at your place. Appointments at 030 21969719.
