Jewelry purchase Berlin: calculate the value in advance

The calculator uses the same formula as we do at the scale: weight times fineness times current rate. A 585 chain weighing 10 grams contains 5.85 grams of fine gold, and exactly that fine gold is paid for. We value stones separately.

At the counter the result can still differ. Stones, steel springs and pearls weigh on your kitchen scale too, and some pieces are alloyed differently than the stamp promises. Only the value after our measurement is binding.

Why the measured value counts for jewelry

Jewelry often looks more or less valuable than it is. A heavy bangle can be hollow. A plain ring can be made of 750 gold. That is why measured values count in our jewelry purchase in Berlin, not the first impression.

The scale comes first. Every piece goes onto a calibrated scale. Then we determine the fineness, meaning the share of pure precious metal in the alloy. You see both values on the monitor. This lets you check the offer against the daily rate yourself before you agree.

Incidentally, the weight of the whole piece is not what is paid. Only the fine gold content counts, and for 333 gold that is one third. A 333 ring weighing 6 grams therefore contains around 2 grams of fine gold. If you know this beforehand, the offer holds no surprises.

WHICH PIECES WE CHECK AT OUR JEWELRY PURCHASE IN BERLIN
Rings
With wedding, signet and solitaire rings the hallmark is usually on the inside. White gold is often rhodium-plated, meaning it is coated with a thin layer of the platinum metal rhodium. The coating hides the alloy, but not our measurement.
Necklaces and colliers
Broken or tangled chains count as scrap gold and are paid by fine weight. Hollow chains look solid but weigh little. For colliers set with stones, we separate metal value and stone value in the offer.
Bracelets and bangles
Link bracelet, bangle or tennis bracelet: steel springs in the clasp do not count towards the gold weight. Hollow bangles give themselves away on the scale because they are lighter than they look.
Diamonds and gemstones
We appraise set diamonds according to the 4 Cs: carat (weight), color, clarity and cut. Certificates from GIA, HRD or IGI make the appraisal easier. They are not mandatory.
Silver and platinum
Silver jewelry usually carries the stamp 925, older pieces also 800 or 835. You recognize platinum by the 950. Be careful with "silver-plated" or EPNS, because then there is only a thin layer of silver on a core of base metal such as brass or nickel silver.
Earrings
A single hoop or a stud without its partner is valued just like a pair. Loose clasps and earring backs are often made of gold. Bring them along.
Dental gold
We also accept crowns and bridges with tooth residue. We measure the platinum and palladium content of the dental alloy as well and settle it at the respective rate.
Designer jewelry and luxury watches
For designer pieces the resale value can exceed the material value. Box, papers and proof of purchase help to document it. We check this piece by piece. We appraise luxury watches as watches, not by the gold weight of the case.
Inheritance and estates
If you want to sell inherited jewelry, you do not have to give up everything. We sort through the jewelry box together with you, and you decide piece by piece what to keep and what to sell. For large collections we come to you for a home visit.

Measuring before we name a price

For the fineness we use an X-ray fluorescence device, or XRF for short, at our jewelry purchase in Berlin. It shows within seconds which metals the jewelry contains. No grinding or acid is needed. Your piece stays intact.

We name one limit openly: XRF measures the surface. With thickly gold-plated pieces it can show more gold than the core contains. In that case we explain how we continue testing.

Reading hallmarks: what the number on your jewelry means

On gold jewelry the hallmark, also called a punch, reveals the alloy. The number states the share in thousandths: 750 means 75 percent pure gold. Pure gold is too soft for jewelry, so it is alloyed with silver, copper or palladium. A lot of copper gives red gold, palladium or silver give white gold.
Be careful with GP, GF, RGP, doublé or 1/20: these marks mean gold plating, the core is base metal. A missing hallmark is no proof of costume jewelry. We also measure unstamped pieces. Pure costume jewelry without precious metal, however, we do not buy.

Selling jewelry in Berlin: five mistakes that cost money

These five mistakes usually happen at home, long before you come to the jewelry buyer in Berlin. Each of them is easy to avoid.

01
Breaking out stones yourself
This damages stone and setting, and a chipped diamond loses value. We value set stones as a piece.
02
Polishing jewelry
Shine adds nothing to the material value. On designer pieces polishing can even wear off engravings and edges.
03
Trusting the magnet test
Gold is not magnetic, but neither is brass. The test therefore does not rule out fakes.
04
Handing it over as one mix
Sort by color and hallmark beforehand. Designer and gemstone jewelry goes on its own pile so it does not pass as scrap gold.
05
Coming without ID
Bring your ID card or passport. For cash payouts from €2,000 the money laundering act requires identification.

Frequently asked questions about jewelry purchase in Berlin
Do I need an appointment for the jewelry purchase in Berlin?
No, you can drop by spontaneously during opening hours. For a few rings or chains, the appraisal takes 15 minutes on average. If you bring a larger estate, it is better to book an appointment so there is time to measure every piece individually. We are open until 6 pm on Saturdays and until 7 pm on weekdays.
Which documents do I need for the jewelry purchase in Berlin?
A valid ID card or passport is mandatory. Diamond certificates, purchase receipts as well as box and papers of designer jewelry are helpful. They prove a value above the material; for heirlooms, old jeweler invoices also help. Without documents we still buy, in which case metal and stones count.
My jewelry has no hallmark. Do you still buy it?
Yes, if it contains precious metal. Old or repaired pieces often no longer carry a hallmark, for example because a ring was widened or soldered. Our measurement shows the actual fineness. If no precious metal is contained, we tell you openly, and you take the piece back with you.
What happens to stones set in gold?
We appraise them as well, diamonds according to the 4 Cs. Small colored stones and glass stones usually have no purchase value of their own. In the offer you see separately which amount is for the metal and which for the stones. This way you can also sell individual pieces only.
Selling jewelry in Berlin without visiting the branch: is that possible?
Yes, by mail: for values under €500 use the Standard gold package, above that the Premium gold package with a free shipping bag, insured up to €1,500. Photograph your jewelry before shipping and enclose a list. If you accept our offer, we transfer the amount. If you decline, you get everything back free of charge.
Do I have to pay tax on the sale of inherited jewelry?
Often not, because private sales are generally tax-free if more than a year lies between acquisition and sale (§ 23 EStG). In the case of an inheritance, the holding period of the deceased person counts. For large amounts, speak to your tax advisor beforehand, as this is general information and not tax advice.
Can I only have my jewelry appraised?
Yes. The check and the offer cost nothing and commit you to nothing. You can take the offer home and think it over in peace. If you come back later, we recalculate with that day's rate, because the gold price changes constantly.
