Rhodium is a silvery-white platinum-group metal and one of the rarest precious metals. It is found in catalytic converters, in investment bars and as a wafer-thin layer on white gold and silver jewelry. Its price fluctuates strongly and can exceed that of gold and platinum. Reading marks and certificates: how to read rhodium

On rhodium bars the stamp states the fineness, for example 999 for 99.9 percent rhodium. It usually comes with manufacturer, weight and a serial number. On jewelry the stamp shows the base metal instead, such as 750 or 925. The rhodium coating on top is paper thin and carries no stamp of its own.

A stamp is a claim, not proof. That is why we check every piece with XRF measurement. If the stamp is missing or worn, we still measure. Please bring the certificate and original packaging for bars.

How can I tell whether my jewelry contains rhodium?

Rhodium rarely appears as a stamp of its own in jewelry. It is mostly found as a wafer-thin rhodium plating on white gold or silver, and a hallmark such as 585, 750 or 925 only tells you the metal underneath. You can only be sure with a measurement: our XRF shows within seconds which metals are contained, and you see the result on the monitor.

My jewelry has no hallmark. Do you still buy it?

Yes, if it contains precious metal. Old or repaired pieces often no longer carry a hallmark, for example because a ring was widened or soldered. Our measurement shows the actual fineness. If no precious metal is contained, we tell you openly, and you take the piece back with you.

Which documents do I need for the rhodium purchase in Berlin?

A valid ID card or passport is mandatory. For bars and coins, certificates, original packaging and purchase receipts help. Without documents we still buy, in which case metal and weight count.
