Why fineness counts for palladium

Palladium is a white platinum-group metal that is hard to tell from platinum, white gold and silver by sight. It is found in jewelry, in investment bars and coins, and as an alloying partner in white gold. That is why at our palladium purchase in Berlin the measurement counts, not the impression.

Reading hallmarks: how to recognize palladium

Palladium is a white platinum-group metal and looks very similar to platinum, white gold and silver. The hallmark states the share in thousandths: Pd 950 means 95 percent palladium, Pd 500 half. We pay for the palladium content, not the weight of the whole piece.

On white gold the hallmark often shows only the gold content, such as 585 or 750, although palladium is part of the alloy. A missing hallmark is no proof against precious metal. We also measure unstamped pieces and show you the result on the monitor.

A first hint is the stamp Pd or Palladium with a number such as 950 or 500. In white gold, palladium is often present without its own stamp; there usually only 585 or 750 is shown. You can only be sure with a measurement: our XRF shows within seconds which metals are contained, and you see the result on the monitor.

My jewelry has no hallmark. Do you still buy it?

Yes, if it contains precious metal. Old or repaired pieces often no longer carry a hallmark, for example because a ring was widened or soldered. Our measurement shows the actual fineness. If no precious metal is contained, we tell you openly, and you take the piece back with you.

Which documents do I need for the palladium purchase in Berlin?

A valid ID card or passport is mandatory. For bars and coins, certificates, original packaging and purchase receipts help. Without documents we still buy, in which case metal and weight count.
