For a luxury watch we appraise brand and material separately. We weigh gold cases and bracelets on the calibrated scale and measure the fineness by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) without damaging the watch. We appraise the brand watch itself by model, condition and equipment.

We name one limit openly: XRF measures the surface. With gold-plated parts it can show more gold than the core contains. In that case we explain how we continue testing.

Reading reference number and papers: what your watch reveals

For a luxury watch the reference number, serial number and papers are the most important details. They show model, year and origin. They are usually found on the case, the case back or the warranty card.

Box and papers are not a must but make the appraisal easier. We also look at watches without documents, with scratches or defects. On gold cases a hallmark such as 750 shows the fineness.

Having the watch polished

Polishing removes material and rounds edges. Collectors often prefer an unpolished original state, especially for sought-after models.

Throwing away box and papers

Original box, warranty card and invoice make the appraisal easier. Gather everything that belongs to the watch before the appointment.

Opening the movement yourself

Dust, moisture and scratches harm the movement and the seal suffers. Keep the case closed, we inspect from the outside.

Selling parts separately

Without the original bracelet or clasp the watch loses value as a whole. Hand in the watch complete, with all links.

Coming without ID

Bring your ID card or passport. For cash payouts from €2,000 the money laundering act requires identification.
