Reading broken gold hallmarks: what the number on damaged gold means

Even on broken gold the hallmark, also called a punch, reveals the alloy. The number states the share in thousandths: 585 means 58.5 percent pure gold. On fragments the hallmark often survives only on a small remnant, such as the clasp. Look for it there before you sort anything out.

Be careful with GP, GF, RGP, doublé or 1/20: these marks mean gold plating, the core is base metal. A missing hallmark, for example because the piece broke off, is no proof against gold. We also measure unstamped parts. Pure plating without a gold core, however, we do not buy.
