Measuring old gold instead of estimating.

For old gold the fineness counts. A piece can contain 333, 585, 750, 900, 916 or 999 thousandths of gold, and the difference is clearly visible in the price. We measure the fineness with an X-ray fluorescence device, XRF for short. It shows within seconds which metals the piece contains. No grinding or acid is needed.

We name one limit openly: XRF measures the surface. With gold-plated pieces it can show more gold than the core contains. In that case we explain how we continue testing.

Reading old gold hallmarks: what the number on your gold means

Even on old or damaged gold the hallmark, also called a punch, reveals the alloy. The number states the share in thousandths: 585 means 58.5 percent pure gold. This fineness is what counts for the material value, not the shape of the piece. On inherited pieces the hallmark is often worn, in that case we measure it.

Be careful with GP, GF, RGP, doublé or 1/20: these marks mean gold plating, the core is base metal. A missing hallmark is no proof against gold. We also measure unstamped and repaired pieces. Pure plating without a gold core, however, we do not buy.

Shine adds nothing to the material value. Scratches and patina do not reduce the gold value, polishing only costs time and on designer pieces even engravings.

Trusting the magnet test

Gold is not magnetic, but neither is brass. The test therefore does not rule out fakes.

Handing it over as one mix

Sort by color and hallmark beforehand. Silver, platinum and designer pieces go on their own pile so nothing passes as plain old gold.

Coming without ID

Bring your ID card or passport. For cash payouts from €2,000 the money laundering act requires identification.
